Forest Stewardship Recognition Award.
The North Vancouver Outdoor School has been chosen as one of this year’s recipients of Wildlife Habitat Canada’s Forest Stewardship Recognition Program award, presented annually to individuals, organizations, and companies for outstanding stewardship in Canada’s forests.
The award was based on the efforts of the North Vancouver Outdoor School to develop the Dave Marshall Salmon Reserve, which integrates field study based learning and extensive salmon and eagle habitat enhancement and restoration with ecological forest of Outdoor School. Dave Marshall was a biologist with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, instrumental in establishing spawning and habitat salmonid channels at Outdoor School and the lower Cheakamus River. The Reserve comprises interconnecting spawning, rearing and habitat channels, as well as study trails, ponds and marsh habitat, which are the foundation to Outdoor School’s experiential Aquatic and Forest curriculum.
Dave Marshall Salmon Reserve partners are the North Vancouver School District, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Department of Fisheries & Oceans, Bridge Coastal Restoration Program (BC Hydro), BC Hydro, Fisheries Renewal BC, Forestry Renewal BC, the Coho Festival Society, Pacific Salmon Foundation, the North Vancouver Outdoor School Alumni Society and the Pacific Foundation for Understanding Nature Society.
